Tin does not readily form salts with oxy-acids. The following table exhibits the methods of detecting the presence of tin, and distinguishing it from other metals in mixed solutions. DETECTION OF TIN SALTS. Remarks. Freedom from Ag, Hg"2, and perhaps Pb. Both dissolve in Ammonium Sulphide (yellow) and in Alkaline Hydrates, thus distinguishing them from the Sulphides of Hg, Pb, Bi, Cd, and Cu, which are insoluble. The solution when supersaturated with Hydrochloric Acid redeposits the Sulphides, which may then be boiled with strong Hydrochloric Acid, in which they dissolve while the Sulphide of Arsenic remains insoluble. This solution placed in a platinum vessel and a piece of Zinc introduced, yields a granular precipitate of Metallic Tin, which may then be redissolved in boiling Hydrochloric Acid, and tested by Mercuric Chloride. This action only occurs with Stannous.salts, which it therefore distinguishes from Stannic. This is a reaction highly characteristic of Stannous salts not forming with pure Stannic, nor salts of other metals. Both precipitates dissolve in excess, the former, however, yielding a precipitate of black Stannous Oxide on boiling. Compounds of tin, when heated on charcoal in the inner blowpipe flame with a mixture of potassium cyanide and sodium carbonate, yield grains of metallic tin. PLATINUM. Symbol, Pt. Atomic-Weight, 1974. Specific Gravity, 2150. Melting Point, I ZT l blowpipe. Platinum enjoys the remarkable distinction of being at once the heaviest substance at present known; the most refractory under the glow of the fiercest furnace; the most defiant to the solvent power of all individual acids; and the poten...
